Calne welcomed Wootton Bassett 3XV to the Rec looking to secure a home win after a disappointing loss the previous week. Calne started strongly and their pack looked to gain the upper hard in the early exchanges. Great breaks from Captain Tom Morten and fellow prop Pete Brownlie created opportunities for Liam Kearney to release the backs who always looked dangerous. Rhys Taylor controlled the game well and it wasn’t long before the magic feet of winger Jay Watkin danced around some desperate Bassett tackling to register the first try of the game.
The visitors gathered themselves well and mounted some promising attacks themselves and the next try would come from some great play from the Bassett winger who kicked long and chased to touch the ball down to score.
The game was highly competitive but it was Calne who always had the answer and with flanker Chris McAlonan, full back Mark Webber and number 8 Bruce Harper, in fine form the result was never in doubt.
Further scores from Jay Watkin (2), Bruce Harper, Tom Morten and Rhys Taylor sealed a satisfying win which according to the referee’s scorecard read 35-10. (evening though at least one of the try’s was converted).
